Can I bring knitting needles on an airplane?

I'm going on JetBlue from Boston to New Orleans later this summer and I was just wondering if I could bring knitting needles in my carry-on. They are US 6 sized needles, plastic with dull points. If I can, can they only be a certain length? Sources would be best, thanks.

  1. no, we dont need another 9/11
  2. I would doubt it, best to leave them at home, saves you any trouble at the airport and the cost of having to trow away your needles.
  3. I was just on a plane today where there was an older woman using her knitting needles. But it was a United flight coming from overseas. I would call the airlines and see what they say.
  4. I'd strongly suggest moving anything questionable to check in luggage. Avoid potential delays for you and make airport screeners life a tad easier. For a best advice call airline and ask them. They know for sure.
  5. Yes. See link below from TSA regarding knitting needles: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1252.shtm I recommend printing this out and carrying it with you in case you run into a TSA agent who disagrees with you, and I'd have a holder or some waste yarn you can put your work on in case they decide that the needles aren't allowed. You don't want to lose all of your work! Just for your reference, British Airways specifically prohibits knitting needles on their flights, and their flight attendants will get rather unhappy if they see you with knitting needles out on their flight. I haven't had any problems on any other airline, even flying internationally.
  6. Absolutely. My husband JUST stopped working for homeland security and I'm an avid knitter, so this is a biggie for me. :) Size, material, and type don't make much of a difference either. They "recommend" you don't bring metal ones, but I've never had a problem bring them on. The only reason they'd not allow them is if you looked "shady".
