Deep cut to tip of middle finger, how do I care for my 3 stitches?

I had a battle w/ a campbell's soup can & it won. So I sliced the top digit on my middle finger open. It bled for over 2 hours. But it happened in the evening & I didn't want to pay for the emergency room. So I went to an Urgent Care around 10:00am, but they took FOREVER, so it was around 12:45pm before they got me all stitched up 3 stitches. The doc. said they preferred people get stitched up w/ in 8 hrs to prevent infection, so I need to watch my cut & make sure I don't see any signs. Just let me know any advice you have on the subject? Thank you!
