which sewing, embroidery machine should I buy?

I havent used one before but there is a deal on the sofia babylock embroidery/sewing machine 699.00 but im am unsure of which to get between the sofia or brother one at walmart, they look identical just about but the sofia has a usb port vs the brother just having a card port. Anyone who knows much about machines help me out here should I spend the extra for what seems like a usb port? model number BL137A Sofia babylock http://www.babylock.com/a-line/sofia/ Brother SE350 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8033273 What advantage would having the usb connection give me, and am I just paying for the name?

  1. The advantage of the USB port is that you can download your own designs. Sometimes this may require special software, but you would then be able to create your own designs. With only the card slot, you must buy a cartridge for any design you may want to use. Each cartridge usually has multiple designs, but can be costly to buy (especially if you want multiple). In short, the USB connection allows you more versatility. Both machines are likely nice and would allow you to do some cool things... But the Babylock sounds like it might have the most options available.
  2. buy the best one
  3. Babylock has wonderful machines. With the Sofia you have many more features that what is offered with the Brother 350, including dealer support, which is where you will need to go to test drive the machine. I have learned that a machine with a larger hoop area is more beneficial. Both brands and models you have given are limited to 4 x 4 and this also limits the size of the design you can stitch. In addition, a dealer will most likely also offer lessons and classes.
  4. Do NOT buy a sewing machine from Wal Mart. only buy from a sewing machine dealer. You will need lessons on how to use the machine, and you will get that from a dealer- Once you buy a machine from Wal Mart you are on your own. There is different upper thread, bobbin thread, stabilizers and needles to use. You have to learn about hooping. Brother is not a good brand of sewing machine. Baby lock is much better. I have a Viking embroidery machine that is 15 years old and running great. I have a sewing machine dealer, that still is there to help me with any problem or questions. I took the free lessons on how to use the machine and how to use the embroidery part. I took several lessons on how to embroider. I took one class just on stabilizers. If you are willing to pay $700, I would go to a dealer and see what used embroidery machines they have. Viking, Pfaff and Bernina are going to be the 3 top brands. Janome is good too. You will be able to sit down and demo the machine before you buy
  5. I purchased a Viking Designer SE and it has USB port and I can also connect it to my laptop. A USB stick came with it and I use that all the time. Go out and demo as many machines as you have available to you -- buying from a dealer is best because of classes and answers to your questions. Best of luck.
