Calling all knitters!! How do you do ribbing and purl stitch?

I started knitting a couple of months ago and I can only do the basics, cast on, knit, bind of. But I'm really good at it. I want to make a hat, but I can't find any directions that show me how to do purl stitch or ribbing. Thanks ...~♥...♥~... It's ahrd for me to understand it when you just type it, it would be nice if you could direct me to a website I can go to that will visionly (can't spell) show me. ♥ thanksomuch ♥

1. When you knit you put the the needle in from the front, when you purl you put the needle in from the back. Ribbing is two knit, two purl or one knit, one purl. I hope this helps.

3. Your first answer is great, but just remember this----when you are going to purl, remember to bring your yarn to the front. The working yarn should be in front. Stick your needle thru the stitch from back to front, wrap the yarn, and slip it out. Ribbing is just alternating knit and purl stitches to create something a little more stretchy, like cuffs for sleeves and stuff. Good luck! Have fun!

Purling is the same as knitting except that instead of putting the needle from the front to the back of the work and wrapping the yarn around behind you have the yarn at the front of the work, put the needle from the back to the front and wrap the yarn around that way. It's very simple. ribbing you knit 1 or 2 stitches, move the yarn to the front of the work passing under the right hand needle then purl 1 or 2 stitches, actually you can rib with as many stitches as you like, it depends how wide you want the ribs to be. When you get to the end of the row turn the work. you will see that the stitches that you knitted now look like purl stitches and vice versa. Purl on top of the stitches that look like purl stitches and knit on the others. Continue for the length of the rib. Best practice with a small square before you get onto your project. Good luck
