knitting problem?
a knitting patter told me to cast on 231 stitches, then knit 1, cast 5 off, rep to end. i was meant to end up with 66 stitches, i ended up with half that!! why?? i thought i was doing it right :( the exact wording is: cast on 231 stitches. K1, cast off 5 stitches, (2 stitches on needle)* k1, cast of 5 stitches, rep from * to end

- I think you may have missed a step in the instructions. 231 is not evenly divisible by 6 (k1, cast off 5) even if you end up with a k1 at each end. Email me with the complete text of this pattern row or point me to the URL for the pattern and I will see if I can help you more. Editing here: this will not work on 231 stitches. Your multiple is 6 so to end up with 66 stitches on your needle you need to have 396 stitches to start with. I've even taken out 12 edge stitches to make the divided number come out to a non-fractional number and it doesn't work.
- in order to knit 1, cast off 5. you need to actually knit 7sts. 231sts divided by 7 = 33 lots of k1, cast off 5. considering that out of every 7 sts you work, you actually end up with 2 sts, then 231 divided by 7 = 33 x 2sts = 66 - so the pattern is correct. been a knitter and crocheter for over 45 years.
