Are they same in knitting: increasing & cast on in the middle of work?!?

- Usually, increasing is only for adding a stitch or two anywhere in the body of what you're knitting. Casting on is for adding a large number of stitches, usually at either end of the piece you're knitting. I just finished a sweater where I cast on at each end to make the sleeves. Increasing gradually adds stitches and shape--casting on adds a block of stitches all at one time. Hope this helps.

- Casting on is different from increasing. Increasing is knitting in the front and back of the st.
- When knitting gloves (or mittens), you need to increase for the thumb gusset. If the pattern doesn't specify an increase, use the KFB: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases I don't know which pattern you're using, but you probably need to cast on a few stitches between each of the fingers. Some cast-ons cannot be done in the middle of a row. If the pattern doesn't specify, use the knit-on or backwards loop: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on
