Stitches

Cross Stitch help for beginner needed?

On counted cross stitch I get that you start at the center, but Im confused on what to count. If my pattern doesn't have any thing at the center what do I count? Am I counting the little squares on the aida cloth? why start in the middle? Please help, thanks.

  1. yes in the middle so u can do it more evenly and yes the lil squares
  2. You count the empty squares on the chart until you get to one with a symbol in it and then that is where your first stitch is on the fabric. Yes you are counting the little squares on the cloth. Cross stitch you will practically always start in the centre. This ensures your design will be in the centre of your fabric. It will also leave a border for mounting and framing. There is nothing worse than running out of fabric I have only managed to do this once with one of my own designs. Good luck and enjoy.
  3. You count the blocks. If there is nothing in the middle you still count over left or right. You start in the middle of your picture so that it will be centered on the cloth. Good luck. hippymimi
