Are there any good biographies on QueenVictoria?

She sounds like an impressive lady. I am an American and even I've heard about her. I recently read an article how she made the art of crochet popular. It was in my craft magazine... I also hear if "Victorian era" things such as furniture, art, designs, and all sorts of stuff. If she inspired us across the Atlantic, she must have been remarkable. Since I like to read non-fiction biographies, I am wondering if there are any good ones about her. I think she was ahead of her time...and probably the coolest monarch as far as monarchs go...(Americans aren't that into monarchs much, but she seems cool.)

  1. Sorry, I cannot answer your question about a good bio about Queen Victoria - who was a very impressive lady. But may I recommend the recent release of the DVD - Young Victoria - it is the first film about this time in her life and it is extremely enlightening - shows what made her who she was, you may also find in the credits information on what books they may have used! If you find a good one - I would be interested.
  2. There are quite a few. For a very readable account of her early years, I recommend Alison Plowden's "The Young Victoria": http://www.amazon.co.uk/Young-Victoria-Alison-Plowden/dp/0750946997 I also like Christopher Hibbert's writing very much, but haven't read his book on Victoria. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Queen-Victoria-Personal-Christopher-Hibbert/dp/0006388434/ref=pd_sim_b_6 There are more suggestions on the sites above which may interest you, and a plethora of books to choose from below: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=queen+victoria In addition to the film mentioned above (which I haven't seen but hear is good), there is an excellent film starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly which tells of the relationship between the widowed queen and her ghillie, John Brown: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Brown
