Stitches

Is there a mistake in this knitting pattern?

I am trying to knit square 57 from the Art of Knitting magazine. It should allow for small holes along the rows, which they have called 'little flowers'. The 5th row does not allow for any holes. Cst on 27 stitches. Row 1-4 knit to end. Row 5: K4, yfwd, sl 1, k1, psso. Yet when I have finished this row, I end up with 4 stitches less. Any ideas where I am going wrong? This is exactly as that part of the pattern is written. Thanks. Sorry, forgot to mention that once this sequence is done, it is repeated until the end of the row.

  1. Row 5: K4, yfwd, sl 1, k1, psso. your instruction tells you to leave a hole. the sl1, k1, psso, removes a stitch. Maybe you need to read the whole pattern over again and maybe even use some knitters graph paper to figure out just what is going on with the pattern.
  2. from your info row 5 - K4, yfwd, sl 1, k1, psso this covers 6sts only and will create a hole on the 5th stitch in - you do not refer to any directions for the other 21sts of that row so how can we determine what the rest of the row involves and how you can lose 4sts. the only thing I can see is if you worked 4 psso's on this row without doing (or counting) the 4 yfwd's that should have been done before them. carefuly read the directions again to see if you missread the instructions or look at your work to see if you made a mistake
  3. The yfwd makes an extra stitch but the psso gets rid of one stitch so you should have the same number of stitches you started with. Check and make sure you're not undoing the yfwd when you go on to the next stitch.
  4. Are you doing the yarn forward correctly? Try http://www.keyboardbiologist.net/Techniques/YarnForwardKnit.htm for details on how to yfwd in continental style or http://www.knittersreview.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=78985. I think this might be your problem as the stitch count according to what you have written will not change, but as it would appear to be repeated 4 times over the 27 stitches I would hazard the guess that the yarn forward isn't correctly done.
