How long should I keep my stitches?

I have a 3/8 of an inch cut on my neck that the doctor stitched up yesterday. Since I will be gone over the 4th, I couldn't make the appointment to take my stitches out until a week from now. Is it a good/bad idea to take my stitches out earlier? I got my stitches on Monday and want to take them out Thursday. Considering it's such a small cut I don't think it would take a full week. Any suggestions?

1. The stitches should be in a week to ten days. Keep them covered with a little antibiotic ointment and a non adherent pad if your outside working.
