What is easier to learn, crochet or knit?

I have never done it before in my life. My mother in-law passed away and I have some of her yarn and crochet needles and want to use some of it to make a baby blanket. What are some good step by step books for first timers?

  1. Either one is just as hard -- or easy. When learning anything, it is often quite difficult, but once your fingers learn what to do, it's very easy. Since you have the crochet hooks and the yarn, use them. There are many good sites where you can learn to crochet, if you can learn that way. Some people actually need to see it done. I would suggest that you take a beginner class in crochet. Your local yarn store (lys) will offer them, or your community centre. It helps to have someone show you what to do, and to have them watch that you are doing them properly. Once you have a bad habit, it's very hard to break and re-learn. Good luck! This is a lot of fun!
  2. knitting is harder to learn. but knitting is way more interesting for me. I bought a book "How To Learn To Knit In One Day". I dog-eared that pamphlet to death. And so happy I did learn... my latest passion is circular needles for hats. I do at least one a day.
  3. Crocheting is harder to learn and it is'nt quite as versatile as knitting. A crochet baby blanket would not be hard though to make.
  4. Since you already have the yarn & hooks, go with the flow, crochet is easy to learn. Go to your local dept. or craft store and buy a booklet, "Learn to Crochet", they are sold near the yarn. These small books only cost $3-4 and they show you pictures and have written instructions on how to do each stitch. Plus they have several simple beginner's patterns (for baby blankets) in them. The booklets are small enough to carry with your yarn in a "to go" Canvas bag (sold in the craft dept also), for those times when you have to sit and wait for appointments. Then you can go onto you tube and watch some video's called "The art of Crochet" by TJW. She has made tutorial videos for many stitches, patterns, and misc items. You can watch and rewind it until you are caught up with her. Here is a link to the first video (crochet 101 Chain) you will need. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptOiDj1iIv0 There are many websites devoted to teaching crochet to beginners, so do a search on crochet. When you are ready go to http://crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php They have FREE patterns there for just about everything.
