Stitches

What is the best embroidery stitch for edges?

I haven't ever embroidered anything before but I have a book on tons of different stitches but it doesn't specifically say uses for each one. I'm trying to make a pair of gloves out of a stretchy fabric and I need a stitch that will stretch with the fabric but keep the edge from unwinding since I cut it there. Any suggestions?
