This is a form of provisional cast on, a variation of the figure 8 cast on where you use a length of waste yarn and wind your working yarn from the slip knot over the needles and around the waste yarn which holds the loops open at the bottom . You'll work whatever it is you're knitting in one direction and later go back to this cast on edge and insert your needle through the bottom of the cast on loops again, then removing the waste yarn and knitting in the opposite direction for the second half of the piece.
