How hard is it to learn to crochet?

I'm wanting to learn how to crochet barbie clothes fairly quickly, so how hard should it be to get the basics down and start?

  1. Well, the good news is that my wife, who is a blind person who has knitted for years, learned the basics of crochet in a few weekly lessons. The bad news in my opinion is that working small in any craft can be really tough and making Barbie doll clothes is really going to be miniature including working in the round for sleeves and pullovers or skirts.
  2. Crocheting may be too difficult for a beginner...but, there is an awesome Barbie clothes book with patterns to seek out at your local bookstore. But I believe the patterns are knit only. Crocheting classes are taught at JoAnn Fabric and some Michael's.
  3. Hi, I'm 15 and my has been showing me how to crochet for the past month and half. I have already made some cute stuff like baby booties!! It's fun and easy if you are willing to learn it!
  4. Learning the basics of crochet is incredibly easy. I learned one night on vacation. It took me a frustrating hour to get my first row of single crochet done, but after that I caught on quickly and was able to finish my first project -a bag- in only two days. I used The Crochet Answer Book. Good luck and don't get discouraged if it doesn't work out your first try!
  5. It really isn't that hard. It does take practice.
  6. I learned at age 10, and I thought it was easy. That was a while ago, and I have crocheted lots of Barbie clothes since then for a daughter and two granddaughters. There are books--I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting! is one that's reasonably priced and widely stocked at Michael's, Wal*Mart, A C Moore, and others. The back pages of any crochet magazine on the newsstand will have the basic stitches. Here's a link to a list of Barbie crochet patterns: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/barbie_fashion.php
  7. If you are comfortable with working with the thread and the smaller hooks you shouldn't have any problems at all. If you look around enough you can also find some patterns that use baby yarn and such too. A good place to look for Barbie patterns to purchase is eBay. I have bought a pretty good number of my patterns and specialty books from different sellers. The book listed below would be a good one to look for in the library. I know mine has it on the shelf. The barbie basics site I linked for you is also full of patterns of various skill levels. I believe once downloaded it is about 69 pages. Just a piece of advice - it can get addictive and sometimes it doesn't seem you can whip them out fast enough for the girls to be ready to play with. I know my 3 daughters are always standing over me asking when they will be done. Good luck! Hope you have tons of fun!
  8. Crocheting is easier to learn than Knitting I think, but some of the patterns you find are a little outdated. I recommend learning to crochet before knitting and look at places like Crochet Pattern Central online to find different free patterns.
  9. It isn't that hard. You have the desire and that helps a lot. You can check out some videos on YouTube , just type "beginning crochet" in the search and you can watch how it is done. Then go to your local craft store or Walmart, and get a skein of yarn. On the label will be the recommended size hook you need to get. You can also buy kits that will have a hook with an instruction book, you will just need to get the yarn. You can always ask for help from a clerk, or a customer in the area-crocheters and knitters are all ways willing to help!
