crocheting: how do i connect single chains?

I just bought the supplies today. 2 seperate yarns, black and purple. I'm trying to make a scarf and incorporate the purple yarn into the black, but I need to know what to do. I've made a single chain and can't find any tutorials on how to do it

  1. Connecting single chain is usually slip stitch, but the rest of your query seems to be about color incorporation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJE1UTuUjxM You can crochet with two yarns, and there are different techniques depending on whether you wish the yarns to be crocheted at the same time (using two threads as one) or if you want to change colors as you go.
