How do I change a crochet pattern so that the finished product will fit me?

I have a crochet pattern from a magazine for a shirt and the sizes in the directions are for bust circumferences 34" and up. I want to make my shirt so that it will fit a circumference of 32.5" and I'm not sure how to change the pattern. For a 34" bust you chain 158 and for the bigger sizes- (38, 42, 46, 50)" you chain (176, 188, 206, 224). Any ideas on how I should re-size the pattern?

  1. That pattern may not need to be changed. The bust circumference of a finished pattern isn't your bust size measurement, it allows for some ease or extra space around the body. Unless you want this sweater to fit like skin, work it according to pattern, since as it is it will give you what is called a *close fit*. There's only 1.5 inches of difference, it won't allow for much under it other than a chemise or a teddy.
  2. You didn't say what hook size was used. Sometimes using a smaller hook size makes a smaller size.
