Would cable cast-on be appropriate for knitting a baby hat?
I've used cable cast-on before when making beanies and the edge looks a lot nicer compared to regular cast-on. However, I know that cable cast-on is very rigid, so I'm wondering whether I should just stick to regular cast-on to avoid ribbing that's too tight. Any opinions?

- either way will be just fine. Babies grow way too fast and outgrow all the tiny things that fit them for only a month or two. I just make it look great so the mother can put it up for a keepsake after the baby wears it once or twice on those really rare outings.
- I nearly always use cable cast-on and have made many baby items. I don't find it rigid, it just gives a firm edge and never have problems with it being too tight. Good luck.
- Cable cast on or knitting should work very nicely. If you are having problems with your cast on being too tight, either relax the tension you have on the yarn or cast on using a needle at least two sizes larger than called for.
- Yes, cable cast-on will work just fine. If you tend to make them too tight, you should relax a bit... and spread out the stitches to have a wider space. One thing you should do is use the regular needle in the left hand (where the stitches will sit) but use a larger needle in the right hand which is going to create the new stitches. Go up 2-3 sizes to provide enough space *between* stitches... that's the critical part. After the cast-on, go back to your regular needles.
