Is an embroidery needle different than a regular needle?

Is an embroidery needle the same as any other needle? Or do I really need to buy a different type of needle if I want to embroider?

  1. Yes, it is larger and has a bigger eye.
  2. yes the eye is bigger
  3. It all depends on what stitch your using. If its a regular stitch with a regular needle...Forget it. You can use a regular needle to do an embroidery stitch.
  4. Yes, they are different. The regular needle has a very small eye, is very slim and has a very sharp point. The embroidery needle is usually longer, thicker, with a larger eye and a blunt point. The embroidery needle is obviously used for embroidery, and also needlepoint and counted cross stitch. If you're embroidering, you'll want to get an embroidery needle as the floss is thicker than regular thread and you'll have trouble getting the thread thru the eye. If you do happen to get it threaded, the eye is so small that the thread will fray and break. Have fun!
