What is suppose to happen after you cast-on when knitting?
I just picked up the knitting needles yesterday, and I am so confused! I've tried watching videos, reading the books, but I CANNOT figure out what is suppose to happen after you cast-on. When I follow what the book/video says, I just end up transferring all the stitches from one needle to the other! Is this suppose to happen?? Please help!!!

- And that is what happens, except that you will have knitted each one as you do it (I mean, you transfer the needle with all the cast-on stitches to your left hand, and insert the empty needle, bring the yarn over, and knit). I find an illustration in a book for beginners much easier to follow.
- The cast on is actually your first row. You want to use the knit stitch to make the second row through all these cast-ons. Just stick your right-hand needle into the first loop on the left hand needle, then bring the yarn around the back of the right hand needle and bring this needle with the yarn on it THROUGH the loop of the left hand needle. This make another stitch which will be on the right hand needle. And just repeat this with all the stitches on the left hand needle. Good luck - it's really easy once you get the trick.
- you probably need to watch someone do it......in person. go to a local yarn shop. you probably don't even need to take a class, they'll help you.
- After you have casted on the stitches on to the needle: the needle with the stitches is always held in your left hand, so hold it in your left hand and the other needle on your right hand. if you haven't learned knitting further i suggest you learn how to knit and then learn how to purl, because that is your next step after the casting on. if you are knitting and purling in correct manner, the stitches eventually do transfer on the other needle. When the first row is done, all your stitches will be now on the right needle. Then you switch needles. The needle with stitches goes back to the left hand and the other needle on your right, and you knit the next row. look at this she goes really slow on point 2:47 she also says the needle with stitches is held in left hand. and on point 5:01 as she knits , all her stitches are on the right needle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzz5QR0HG0E and here she tells you how to purl and again she takes the needle in her left hand and starts purling on point 0:53 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKgmkneSqCI
- Everything you need to know can be found here:http://www.knittinghelp.com/ The videos are so much clearer and have more explanation that anywhere else on the net. I was new to kitting last year and found this site and it helped me so much. I couldn't "get it" til I actually saw someone doing the knitting. Pictures in books just got me confused. After you do the cast on assuming you are right handed you have the needle with the stitches in your right hand, put it in your left hand and insert the empty needle from the back behind the first stitch but in front of it on the other side and using your right hand wrap the yarn around the needle one time and pull back and out then slide the stitch you went through off. You should have a stitch on your right needle now. Then continue to the end and flip and repeat for knit stitch only. Use the above link to learn how to do a purl stitch(it's just a knit stitch that enters from the back.;)) Take it easy have a good time and don't stress it's really not as hard as it's made out to be. Trust me, I was so frustrated and threw my needles across the room more than once. You'll get it.
- not really, once you have cast on your stitches the needles have that have all the stitches will be in your left hand and the empty needle in your right. you need to learn the basic two stitches knittinghelp.com/videos/knit-stitch knittinghelp.com/videos/purl-stitch now you start the knitting portion like knitting every stitch every row. this is called garter stitch, the easiest stitch there is, perfect for beginners. http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips, look under basic stitche patterns. the possibilities are endless. here is a good pattern to start out on. http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/PATTrockstar.html to change colors you just drop the color you are using at the beginning of the row and just start knitting with the new color.
- You have now done the hardest part and that is the casting on of the stitches. Now all that you have to do is look at the instructions and see what it wants you to do but take the needle you had in your left hand{ if your right handed otherwise do the opposite} and start with Row 1. If you have any more problems e-mail me for further info.
- yes you kinda do end up transferring all of the stitches from one needle to the other it is supposed to happen! once you cast on you knit and then the stitches go to the other needle and then you take the other needle and start knitting on that!! sorry that i can't explain it better!
