Cross Stitch My Own Design?

I want to be able to cross stitch my own *simple* designs onto non-graph fabric. (Like pillowcases and tote bags.) How would I go about doing this?

1. You use what is called waste canvas, this gives you a temporary grid for making your stitches to keep them even. I can't imagine doing it without it. Here is a link where it tells you about it. Nan
