Should stitches have caused pain in my thumb or is it normal for stitches to hit a nerve?
I cut my thumb and got 4 stitches. The cut didn't hurt before the stitches and I was able to move my thumb normally. Once teh stitches were in it started to hurt. After 5 days I had them taken out and the guy taking the stitches out said that one of them was in a nerve (because it hurt more than anything getting it out). Now, 13 days after the stitches went in, it is still tender and not as usable as it should be.

- fingers are one of the parts of the body with most nerve endings in it. i imagine any damage to a finger or thumb would be very painfull for a while. i'd say go to another doc, see what they say. its probably just a case of time.
- It must have gotten really deep to touch a nerve. And stiches deffinitely cause very specific and irritating pain. And since you have had them for so long, it is possible that it hurts for long also. You better check if some infection hasn't started, or "wash" the wound with some strong alcohol, although it won't feel nice
- It depends what stitches you got, if the stitches are touching your nerve thats bad becasue it may cause damage to your nerevs. See a doctor if he says it's ok go see a specialist and get it x-rayed. Hope this helps :)
- Go check with the doctor !. I think it will take sometime to get back to normal
- The area is probably just bruised and still healing. Deep cuts on fingers take a while to heal and can be very sore while they do. I had a deep cut on my thumb requiring stitches and it took a while for it to heal properly. I had a hard time picking things up with that hand because the skin was too tight. If it's really bothering you, if your thumb is turning colour or if it has a bad odor you should go back to the doctor as it could be an infection.
- You could of hit a nerve when you cut it. things like that do take time to heal, make sure you stretch it out and move it around so you don't lose any mobility. And be happy it's still there, it could of been a lot worse. I drove a thick nail all the way through my index finger and it took well over a month before it felt almost normal. And I didn't even go to the doctor. Sucks not having medical. Just give it some time, it should be fine.
