Has anyone read A Stitch in Time by Ann Rinaldi?

Ok, I'm reading the book A Stitch in Time by Ann Rinaldi. I really don't understand chapter one, and i looked on Sparknotes but I couldnt find it. If anyone can find it or knows a site PLEASE tell me!

1. I have read it. It is a children's book and not a classic so I doubt that it will be on spark notes or any of those kinds of sites. Chapter one is about the 12 yr old boy, Cabot, looking for a ship to come into the harbor so he can get a gold coin. He meets up with his sister's fiancee who is a ship captain and he gives Cabot a note to give to his sister. Do you have any specific questions?
