What size crochet hooks would be most useful to buy as a gift?
I want to buy 3 or 4 crochet hooks for someone (adult) wanting to learn to crochet. Any suggestions please, for the most useful sizes, I am thinking of fine to medium but there are so many to choose from.

- G through J or K. Those are the most common. I found some on the net.
- I'd get a set like this. http://www.createforless.com/Boye+Crochet+Hook+Set+Bonus+F-I+with+Scissors/pid57821.aspx?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=cse Or this one. http://www.createforless.com/Bates+Crochet+Hook+Set+Silvalume+w/Vinyl+Pouch/pid28855.aspx?SI=90d17419-bad4-4ddf-a62e-c9c8f9408942 I don't think she'll be ready to use the smaller ones for awhile and she can go up and down to adjust her gauge with these.
- jay big bong billy bong super high me
- J or K are used a lot. Another thought is to get a pattern for an easy beginner project (like a scarf) and give them the pattern along with a skien of yarn to make it and the hook they need. I did this once and included a "coupon" for a free crochet lesson with me and my friend loved it! There are also many learn to crochet sets that come with a variety of hooks, along with instruction book and some even have DVDs.
- To narrow it down, I would get them specific patterns you think they would like or a few books of patterns (you can get them really cheap), and get them the hooks that go with the patterns in the books. That way you have given them what they need to do anything within the books. I have found the size of the hook really depends on what I want to do, and it would be hard for me to decide which ones to buy for someone else as well. I think if you give your friend some patterns and the hooks to go with them it would seem like a more complete gift than just giving them hooks of random sizes. Just my two cents:)
