Can someone please explain these knitting instructions?
I'm new to knitting and have only been doing it for 2 days but i wanted to make something other than a scarf. Can someone please explain what the instructions below mean? Row 1: K1, p1 across. Row 2: P1, k1 across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures desired length. Bind off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

- Sure! It's very easy, don't panic :) Row 1 just wants you to knit the first stitch and purl the next stitch, then knit the next stitch and purl the stitch after that all across the row. Row 2 is just the same but you start off the row with a purl stitch then a knit stitch then purl then knit all across the row. ( I use a cheat sheet where I write a #1 and a #2 and after I complete each row I make a check mark next to that number to always know where I am if I put my knitting down for awhile.) Just keep repeating the two rows until you reach the length called for in the pattern, then bind off. Binding off is just knitting two stitches and bringing the first stitch over the top of the second stitch and off the right hand needle with the left-hand needle. When you're done binding off, leave a long length of yarn hanging to be used for sewing up the seam. Ta-Da! you did it!!
- Sounds like you could use visual assistance since you are new to knitting. Check out these how to video's I teach knitting free, now in my 21st year. There are many links online with free video's showing you how to: eg. knit, cast on, cast off, purl, seed stitch etc. Sounds like you want to learn how to seed stitch. Do you know how to purl? Once you know how to Knit you need to learn how to purl then you can use a combination of the two stitches to form the seed stitch. Row 1: you *Knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch* repeat from * to * to end of row or across the row, or to the end of the row, it all means the same thing. repeat from * to * means (repeat from star to star) Row 2: you Purl 1 stitch, Knit 1 stitch. This means that you do the opposite stitch on row 2. (If it was a knit stitch on row 1, then row 2 would be a purl stitch) To see the difference when you look at the stitch you just knit there will be a horizontal line across the knit stitch on the side of your knitting that is the farthest away from you (the back of the needle of the stitch you just knitted) A purl stitch will have a horizontal line across the stitch you just purled on the side of your work facing you (the front of the needle of the stitch you just purled) There are FREE video's that show you how to cast on, knit, purl, cast off, etc go to: http://www.bfranklincrafts.com Click on a picture of one of the stores, Click on the words" Tips & Techniques", Click on the words "Knitting Instructions" Video pictures show you how to cast on, & knit, cast off etc. http://www.bfranklincrafts.com http://www.lionbrand.com http://www.smarter.com http://www.Graspr.com Seed Stitch (This is a combination of Knitting 1 stitch, purling 1 stitch across row 1 & row 2 doing the opposite stitch across the row.) Row 1: K 1, P 1 means (Knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, across the row) Row 2: P1, K 1, means (Purl 1 stitch, Knit 1 stitch, across the row) Bind off means cast off: Knit 2 stitches, take the 1st stitch over the 2nd stitch that you just knitted and drop it off the needle, then knit one more stitch & repeat ( take the first stitch over the 2nd stitch & drop it off the needle) repeat in this manner until only 1 stitch remains leave a long tail (or a length of yarn so you can thread the end of yarn into a large hole sewing needle called a yarn darning needle) to sew or weave in this end back & forth a couple of times so as to secure your work) My favourite links are one of the first 2 links.
- assuming you already know your basics. casting on, knit, purl and bind off. if not http://www.knittinghelp.com is the best site. you can also see tutorials on youtube. assume you have casted 6 stitches(what ever your pattern says) on your needles Row 1 : knit 1 purl 1 knit 1 purl 1 knit1 purl1...(until the number of stiches in ur pattern) row 2 : purl 1 knit 1 purl 1 knit 1 purl1 knit 1... row 3 - same as row 1 row 4 : same as row 2 row 5 : same as row 1 like that... you will complete your scarf following what your pattern says about how many stitches and how many rows( or your desired length) this is seed stitch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2-23rOi0I the trick to seed stitch is that stitch you end with on the last row you start with on the next row. if you end with purl on first row you will start with purl stitch on 2nd row. p.s. dont forget to bring your yarn forward when you are about to purl and bring it back when you're about to knit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RiFyvL6NHk
