What sizes of crochet hooks should I buy for amigurumi?

I'm a crochet beginner. I want to teach myself how to crochet because I'm really interested in amigurumi (Japanese crocheted stuffed animals.) Unfortunately, most of the online amigurumi patterns neglect to tell me what size hook to use. What hook sizes should I buy as a beginner? Which sizes are best for amigurumi?

  1. um try 16 thats my size
  2. Are you going to crochet with yarn or thread? If its yarn go for a size G which is most often called for and used in the 4 ply yarn. If its thread get size 7 as that is used mostly and the size 10 thread is called for. If this does not help contact me.
  3. The rule is that you use the crochet hook that is appropriate for the size of yarn or thread you are using. Usually, you would use the same size hook as the thread, but you need to allow your own particular style of working. Some people are very tight, others not so much. And if you want to make this thing looser or very tight as well. So use the size of thread as a guide, and make adjustments as required. Of course, you always make a sample swatch to get your gauge -- that is a given. Never skip that step!!
  4. Here are patterns to use as a reference. It all depends on the size of yarn and your tension. These patterns are adorable. Have fun!
  5. The size needle depends on the pattern, your yarn and your tension. I found the following patterns for you to refer to: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/animals.php This is a video to show how to crochet amigurumi dolls: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-crochet-japanese-amigurumi-dolls-using-single-crochet-222609/ This is a "knitting tutorial" http://www.hookandneedles.com/2008/03/22/amigurumi-tutorial-1/ Happy crafting.
  6. When I am using worsted weight yarn I usually use a size D 3MM hook. When using a novelty furry yarn I go up to an E 3.5MM. If it is an English pattern they will likely suggest a hook size for you. Try that first. Remember you want your stitches to be tight so that the filling doesn't show.
  7. Amigurumi is usually done with a smaller hook than called for with the type of yarn you are using. This makes for a tight, closely stitched crochet, which prevents stuffing from peeking through or coming out. I suggest using a hook a size or two smaller than recommended for the yarn you're using. That information is usually on the label.
