How do I keep a stockinette stitch scarf from roll in on itself?

I making a 50 stitch wide stockinette stitch scarf and its curling really bad, how can I make it stop doing that, if not completely then at least help it a little. any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm already 16 inches into the scarf

  1. That is its nature. That's why they made stockings from it. The knit side is pulled by the purl side. You could try slipping the first stitch of every row, or knitting the first stitch of every row, but a rib scarf or a tube in stocking-stitch (UK term) are better. I've just made a very nice moss stitch (seed stitch) one, which will never curl.
  2. There are a couple of things to do. When you start knitting it put some type of border in a different stitch on the sides or when you've finished your scarf pick up stitches on each side and knit a border on or crochet a border. There are some gorgeous scarves on this page several of them show a border on them. http://www.heritageyarns.com/lace-scarf-patterns.htm
  3. You're pretty far in to change it now. If I were you I'd finish the scarf and then do two rows on each end in crochet. Attach yarn, single crochet into each stitch, turn work. Chain 1, 1 single crochet into first stitch, chain 2, single crochet into 3rd stitch, repeat. Chain 2 and skip one stitch across to make holes along the side, then add fringe. It will weigh down the ends.
  4. Here is a link that should solve your problem.
