Stitches

My dog has stitches on her paw the vet put a cone on head she tore it off how can I keep her from licking?

She's a very hyper dog ..she destroyed the plastic cone only after 24 hours..we keep her in a kennel most of the time to keep her off leg but how can we keep her from licking the stitches that need to be on for 2 weeks

  1. you can buy a new cone at petsmart or petco :) good luck
  2. Phone your vet about other options. Ask about bitter apple being put on the paw (NOT on the stitch line, but around it).
  3. buy her another cone. And dont keep her in ehr kennel, you know how it feels for a dog, to have that thing on and be kept without walking?... If not, put a little bandage, kind of plastic around her paw.
  4. there is a type of "cone" that goes around the dogs neck like a brace but this only works for injuries in the "rear" region. you may need to keep replacing the cone.
  5. tape a sock onto her paw... works a treat!!! :) xxx
  6. Put an old (CLEAN) sock on her leg and tape it with medical tape as high up as you can. fix the lampshade with the tape. while your at it. otsoktl I agree
  7. You can buy another cone at PetSmart or Petco, but she will most likely destroy it again. You need to call your vet and ask them what to do. It is free to call and i'm sure he would be glad to help, because if she tears open the stitches her paw could become infected.
  8. Buy a new one or give it a chew raw hide bone that will keep it off the stitches for a while. My dog did the same EXACT thing. He has stitches on his paw and gave them a cone thingy to put over. We decided to take it off. Then we left it out and the dog chewed it all up. But what we noticed was when it was chewing it it forgot all about the stitches. And we got him a chewy raw hide toy.
  9. Put a sock on it (an baby sock should fit). Wrap the top with Vet-wrap (Ask you vet for some, Petsmart may have some too). Some bitter spray on the sock can help too. Giving her a bone or interesting toy to chew will help distract her so she doesn't chew it.
