Stitches

Does anyone out there know how to cast off a knitting project?

I have just learned how to knit, and I need to know how to finish off my project once I take it off the needles. Does anyone know how to do this? Any help appreciated.

  1. Hello, you tube has the best ever videos on knitting try this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0plhuwVF4j0 i am rubbish at doing stuff unless i can actually see it- and this video is really helpful
  2. There are several ways depending on what the item is. If a tight bind off is acceptable, on the last row you knit two stitches, then use the tip of the left needle to pull the first stitch over the second stitch. Knit one more stitch and repeat. Sometimes, to keep this edge loose, people recommend using a bigger needle to work this last bind off row. A stretchier edge is created by knitting two stitches together. Slip that loop back to the left needle and knit it together with the next stitch. Keep doing that (slip back and knit two together) until you've used up all the stitches. Cut your yarn, leaving a six inch tail, and pull up through that last loop.
  3. The first step is to put it back on the needles. You shouldn't remove it with live stitches exposed (ones that could pull off if mistreated). What you are describing is 'binding off', and it's easy to do. Here's a simple method called the knitted bind off. It's the same to do whether you knit or purl the last row, so if you are working in stockinette stitch, use whichever one you would do if this is a normal row. Knit or purl 2 stitches. Now, pull the loop for the first stitch over the loop for the second stitch, off the needle; the loop for the second stitch should stay on there. Basically, you are kind of letting the loop for the first stitch rest on the loop for the second. You can do this with the tip of your left needle, or a crochet hook, but it will go faster if you learn how to do it with the needle. Now you have bound off one stitch. It's that simple! Knit or purl another stitch, and then do the same thing. Now you have bound off two. To bind off the entire project, just do this across the whole row; whenever you have two stitches on the needle, bind off the first one. When you have done the last one and there is one loop left on the needle, cut your yarn (leave 6" or more tail) and pull it through. Weave in the loose end of yarn and you are finished!
  4. Sorry, can't help. I cannot remember how to cast on, or how to cast off, but I do remember the different stitches I did!! Isn't it amazing what the mind collects and forgets over the yers.
