Stitches

Why do people get a "stitch in their side" when running or pushing their body?

When I go out for my jogs, my routine is about 1.2 miles long. I wear weights on my ankles to make the most of the time and distance and it starts easy, gets hard after a 1/4 mile, and then I get the stitch after about 3/4 of the whole routine. I just wanted to know why anyone would get the stich in their side? Thanks in advance.

  1. Lack of water causes your muscles to cramp.
  2. cramped muscles eat bananas for potassium for that and if it's your legs that are cramping, keep them warm
  3. because you not breathing enough when your doing a sport try breathing more
  4. I used to get stitches all the time! Its a matter of breathing and when you work hard a limited amount of air can get through. To help the problem eat lots of bananas (potassium prevents cramps), stretch out your sides, and when you get a cramp, stop and breathe slowly in thorugh your nose and out through your mouth. Hope this helps!
  5. For me, I actually have a minor rib cage abnormality. It is actually quite common, with 1/10 people being affected, according to my doctor. If it continues to hurt, visit your physician, as this can eventually develop into a serious curvature of the rib cage. You probably are just cramping though =)
  6. It is most likely caused by the constant up and downward motion... lack of water would explain it except it doesn't happen when you are doing other exercise where you sweat... it is more likely stretching of the visceral ligaments due to repeated vertical translation and jolting. How to prevent: Improve fitness Strengthen the diaphragm by using exercises such as those that aid respiratory rehabilitation Strengthen core muscles (abdominals, lower back, obliques) Limit consumption of food and drink two to three hours before exercising (in particular, drinks of high carbohydrate content and osmolarity (reconstituted fruit juices)) Drink water beforehand to prevent muscle cramps Warm up properly (Stretch before running for a long period of time) Gradually increase exercise intensity when running Exhale when the left foot hits the ground, and inhale when the right foot hits the ground Run on soft surfaces
  7. That means your muscles are cramped up. You need to stretch alot more before you excersize. Also eat alot of protein, that helps.
  8. I would have to guess it from the diaphragm muscles cramping up. the more you exercise cardiovascularly , the better that should get. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water. people people people, he understands its cramps, the question was why is it on your side...
