  1. The lengths are standard for each diameter, but the one I measured of my own (5.5mm) that was handy was 14 inches (35 cm). Some are maybe an inch longer or shorter. I've made full-sized bedspreads with this size, the yarn is soft enough that it allows that much width for the stitches. EDIT: I checked some of my other hooks, and the longest I have is the 14 inch. There are a few that are 10 inch for finer yarns and thread. I found the 22 inch flexible hooks on the Joann Fabrics website, but haven't used these myself. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?review=all&CATID=cat2873&PRODID=prd28062
  2. If you are talking about the Afghan stitch then I would recommend getting a hook that is long. I've found them on the web as long as 22". That's the one I would get. This stitch is the only one I know how to do really well. I've made 3 large afghans using that stitch and am working on my 4th. The one I have is not quite that long but is long enough to get over 5 feet of width on to the hook. By purchasing a hook that can hold so much work on it you can make almost any size project you want. Once place I saw had a set of different sized hooks all with a 22" (56cm) length. I'm tempted to purchase it. The hook I have is a size J and is one I've had for over 30 years. Personally, I've never had to count stitches and all of that. I don't know how to do those patterns that are out there. I prefer to use variegated yarn so that it creates its own pattern. Unfortunately I can't find the site that had the hooks as a set. Perhaps you'll be able to find it . I hope you found this helpful.
