baby blankey crochet?

Hey all, I'm crocheting a baby blanket. I started with a chain of 60, its about the length of my forearm. Will this be big enough? It is for a friend so it's not even like I can put it over the babe to see. Should I undo it and make it longer? What do you think? I'm sorry, I didn't mean long, I meant wide. I'm a bit of a putz today.

  1. You will need to make it at least 3 feet long for it to be usable for more than just after the birth. Maybe like a 3x2 1/2 or 3 1/2x 2 1/2.
  2. A baby wrap size or carriage blanket for baby should be at least 36x36 inches. A crib sized blanket should be 36x45 inches or larger. Lay your chain on a flat surface and measure it. It should be at least that length (plus whatever chains you need for turning) to be wide enough.
  3. Most baby blanket are about a 36 inch square. Will you be adding a border around your blanket? This will make it bigger. I usually do an edging of one row single crochet, then a row of a shell stitch.(5 double crochet stitches all in one stitch, skip 2 stitches, single crochet in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in next stitch repeat) Here's a picture at: http://crochet.about.com/library/bl5dcshellpic.htm/ I like making a big granny square for baby blankets. Check out http://lionbrand.com/patterns/60293.html?noImages= You can make this any color you desire. A handmade gift is the best.:)
  4. crocheted baby blankets in the standard size are 36 X 36 however, the standard in crib size is 36 X 45. I like to make mine even larger. I make mine 45X48 so that they are plenty large for when they go into their toddler years. After putting so much work into the blanket, I want to make sure they do not outgrow it anytime soon. Good luck with your baby blankets! I am sure whateve size you decide on, it will be beautiful! Handmade baby blankets are the best gifts to receive!
  5. 100-125 chains would be a nice size for a baby blanket and that will work for at least the first year.
