I Need Help to Crochet a Baby Blanket in Squares for Preemie?
Hi, I've been looking for a pattern that using a closed stitch with squares to make a baby blanket. I don't want to make a "granny square" blanket. I'm pregnant and expecting to have a preemie baby, and the granny squares are too open for a preemie. I don't want to get my baby's fingers or toes to get caught. So I want to go with a stitch that will be closed. I'm fairly new to crocheting I've been doing it for about 6 months. I've gotten pretty good at it. Can anyone help me out here? What stitch can I use? Or do you know of a good pattern? I forgot to add that for this project I would like to use baby yarn.

- single crochet would be the stitch you need (double crochet if in US) but as the blanket will only be a small size then it might be easier to crochet it in one piece instead of lots of squares put together As for patterns, I use a free program I found on the net for creating patterns for blankets of any size / any yarn, but you need to work a test swatch first to get the gauge for the program to create the pattern. If you cannot find the help you are looking for here this program may be worth a try - after all it is a free download. www.greatknitdesigns.com (the shawls and afghans one)
- if it has to be crochet, then use single stitch. i have knitted some nice blankets, just using a simple stocking stitch. i changed colours or reversed the stitches to create patterns. stocking stitch is good, as it has no holes for tiny fingers or toes. i would get a selection of colours and make 6 inch squares using single stitch. then join them together.
- You can google "crochet square motifs" and come up with some patterns, or go to the local libray or bookstore and see if they have a book on squares (there are a bunch of them in print). You just need to match up your hook size with your yarn. Personally, I wouldn't do a squares balnket for a preemie -- I'd worry about the seams being rough for delicate skin.
