EXPERT CROCHETERS! How do I crochet a scallop edge for a baby blanket?
To give you an idea of my project, it is a 7sq by 7sq granny square baby blanket (49 squares total). Each of the squares has a 1 inch border of white and all are joined together by white. There are vertical ridges on each side where the yarn has been joined. My colors are: white, purple, pink, blue, yellow, and green - all pastel. I want to incorporate all of the colors into the border. Any fun ideas that are fast?

- simple start in the third stitch from the corner, and do 5 double crochet in that space, skip five spaces, do 5 double crochet in the next space. all the way around, changing colors would be a huge pain in the butt so if you found a varigated yarn that would go with all your other colors, use that.
- Here are some instructions: http://www.woolcrafting.com/crochet-scallop-edging.html I agree with the previous answer...use varigated yarn for the multicolor look without having to change yarns frequently.
- Varigated, but from your discription I would eliminate the white in the border edge (except for very last round) as it sounds like there is already that edging the whole projuect. So, start with one of your colors and work around your projuect in the scallop pattern (i.e. single crochet, 3 double crochet, single crochet, evenly spaced across). 2nd row: new color work single crochet around increasing on corners as needed. Repeat the 2nd row with remaining color expect for on the last row work picot stitch around in white.
- Here's some visuals for you...scroll down to the sample of yellow, white and green yarn. Use variegated yarn, Have fun!! http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa062098.htm
- This should be a lovely blanket for a lucky baby. I would do a row of sc in each colour whith 3 sc in the corner to keep it from curling and then do the scallop in white as follows: Join white in any stitch and ch 3, make 2dc in same place as ch,* skip 2 sts and ss in the next st, ch3 and 2 dc in the same place as ch, rep from * all around keeping the corners correct. Join at the end with ss. This scallop looks very pretty and is fast to work. The sc rows in all the colours will make the white scallops standout.
- I have made similar baby blankets with 2 color( usually pink & white or blue and white etc) granny squares for a quilt look. I usually do the border in white. Make the blanket stand out more.
- The scallop is a good edging and if you can't find varigated yarn, use a bigger hook and all 3 colors.
