- Before you need a pattern, you need to learn the basic stitches to access what your skill level will be. You then choose a pattern. There are many free patterns offered on the web. Learn how to start at this site. http://learntocrochet.lionbrand.com

- If you have never crocheted before, obviously you need to learn. Since you are motivated that should not be a problem. You are probably spending a lot of time at the hospital and don't have a lot of time to sit at the computer, but if you can spare a few moments with hook and yarn, check out my web site to learn the beginnings at http://www.crochetcabana.com . The patterns are all pdf downloads, but once you learn the basic stitches, you can make a beautiful crocheted blanket by just going along in rows and changing colors as fits your pattern. You could also use a variegated yarn which would give a nice pattern to your blankie. Having had two preemies myself, I know how you feel. Saying a prayer for your wee one. You might have a look at the granny square - there are lots of photos in that tutorial and it is quite popular. I'd learn the basic stitches first though. Good luck.
