Where can I learn to crochet or knit?

- You Tube has video's showing all types of crafts, like the knitting looms, innovative knitting machine, crocheting and also knitting. I have watched many and there are some very good video's. Also www.stitchguide.com . I am sure you will enjoy it. There are also the groups on yahoo. Good Luck and Happy New year
- I learned how to crochet from a volunteer older lady at church. If you don't belong to a church, our local library had a announcement of groups that meet there and the ladies there helped me to sharpen my skills. Another option may be the adult day care center like Alternative for the Older Adults, there's ALWAYS senior citizens who could teach you and have someone to talk to at the same time.
- you can try the place where i started. its a tv show called Knitty Gritty, they show you a step by step instruction from the knitters point of view and they go nice and slow so that you can see what they are doing. http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/episode_archive/0,2019,DIY_18180_445,00.html
- Walmart and Drug stores they have magazines and books on how to knit and crochet. Good Luck to you.
- Lots of great resouces both on line and in your local community. Try finding a Group in Yahoo Groups that meets in your area. Knitters and Crocheters are generally generous with their knowledge providing you arrive with the right tools. There are also how to kits from Michaels and JoAnns craft stores that provide the tools, a well written book with basic patterns and step by step pictures. They even provide the names of yarn you should buy to go with the patterns. These stores also provide lessons on occassion too (probably have to pay a small fee plus bring your own supplies). Check your area for a Local Yarn Store (LYS) they are almost always very helpful with beginners, provide classes and sometimes free advise to a "regular" customer. Some Barnes and Nobles have a knit group that meets in their coffee area. You can definitly learn how to knit by looking at videos on line and following along. But its so much more fun to learn from a new friend.
- For knitting go to http://www.knittinghelp.com and for crochet http://www.nexstitch.com/Tutorials.html. I hope these are helpful.
- The best thing is to find someone who can teach you in person. It's so much easier this way. If that's not possible http://www.knittinghelp.com is THE best site for learning to knit. Unfortunately there's not a comparable site for crochet, but you tube should have videos for crochet. I just can't attest to their helpfulness. A good crochet site is http://crochet.about.com
- The best places to learn are: 1. A retired person who loves to teach knitting and/or crocheting. Contact your nearest senior center. 2. A store that sells yarn. Either a local store or a chain like JoAnn's. 3. A well-written book if you are good at following written directions. 4. A class offered by your local park and recreation or adult education.
- I was googling around the internet earlier looking for just such sites to refer people to. Found this one with videos to show you how to crochet: http://hassdesign.com/StitchLegend/ have lots of fun! it is very relaxing when you finally understand the language!
- Wow! Yahoo answers came through again! You have some great answers already. I will try to add to them. 1. www.learntoknit.com this site has links for both knitting and crocheting. 2. about.com/crochet is fabulous. 3. www.lionbrandyarn.com 4. Joann Fabrics sells a CD called Knitting Made Easy and another called Crochet Made Easy. they run about $6.99 and the instructions are the best I was able to find in a book or online. 5. Your local Home Ec teacher. He/She will have resources for you in your local area. 6. Your local Senior citizens center. There is bound to be someone there that can teach you to knit or crochet or both. I would try only one at a time. By using your local Senior's, you are allowing them the opportunity to teach something they know that has been and used to be handed down by generations. You are also giving them a sense of worth and value. You may even make a new friend. It would be wonderful if you could meet with them once every week or so. It would give you both soething to look forward to. 7. Your local community college. 8. Your local yarn shop. They often have times set up for people to come in and work on their projects and get help from each other. 9. Your local internet provider may their own website where you can pot a classifed ad looking for instruction in knitting or crocheting. 10. your local 4-H office. There is bound to be knitting intructors in your area already teahing people how to knit or crochet. 11. Your local Home Extension office. These people are in place to help you learn/manage/run all aspects of your home life. They will know people who knit or crochet and will be able to put you in touch with the right people. 12. Your local Community Education department. this usually runs through Parks and Rec or the local school district. 13. Yahoo Answers. This is a great way to find fabulous ideas and links...search for the word knitting or crocheting and you will get tons of previously asked questions and you can check out the links that people have posted. Great way to find all those free patterns after you learn the basics. Wow! This was probably too many options but I know each of them will work for you. Use the ones that fit you best! Have a wonderful New Year! What a great time to learn a new skill!
- You have more suggestions already than I could have thought of. So, my word to you is to, 'think about how you learn best?' What is most comfortable to you, reading, watching a video, or being face to face with a live demonstrator? I love reading and writing so I always just review the basics in a booklet before I pick the crochet hook back up. But I think I recall having the basic stitches shown to me by a family member when I was still unsure I could do it. If you are klutzy like me, you might want to go with the crochet. I would probably be dead if I had ever tried using those pokey knitting needles! You usually can't stab yourself with a crochet hook.
- Try www.wikihow.com Best of luck... Michelle
- The best way to learn I think is "hands on" watching and getting instruction from a "live" person. I really like the offering of DVD's as well as the online help. I agree with the gal who said, find a knitting pal, we knitters are always happy to help someone who truly wants to learn.

- The best way to learn is to find someone in your comumity that knows how. More time than not they will be more than willing to teach you. As hands on is the easiest way to learn.
