tryn to learn crochet can someone tell me in plain terms what this means; [3dc. (Ch2. 4dc) 3 times] in ring.?
I know how to create the chain and the ring and I know how to single and double crochet - just don't understand how to read the pattern. Thanks

- Instead of doing the dc in a stitch, you are putting them right into the middle of the ring. There's not need to insert your hook into a stitch to do these stitches. What you are doing is 3 dc, then ch 2, do 4 more dc, ch 2, 4 dc, ch 2, and end with 4 dc. Anytime you see instructions in parentheses (ch 2, 4 dc) and (so many) times after it, it means you do just the instructions in the parentheses that many times. Here are some pictures and instructions on reading patterns that you might find helpful. http://www.crochetcabana.com/reading-patterns.htm http://youtube.com/watch?v=gJCd_-V2D5k&feature=PlayList&p=FFF15236A0B97605&index=5 The youtube video is for making a granny square. If you advance it to about 1:45, she will show you how to crochet into the ring. ~Happy Crocheting~
- I think that you had instructions to begin with chain x amount of stitches and form a ring. You did this and then it told you to crochet 3 stitches. That 3 stitches at the beginning of each row represents a double chain. So when you get to the end of that row you will slip into the top of the ch 3 and that will make up the other part of the ch3 so you will have the equivalent of 4dc all around the ring.
- OK here goes I am assuming that you have all ready have chained a # of stitches and slip stitched to make a ring, then there was possibly a chain 3 (counts as first DC Double crochet) then your question [3dc(ch2. 4dc) 3times] in ring? you will crochet 3double crochets stitches chain 2 then 4double crochet stitches, then you the repeat the Chain 2 and 4double crochet stitches 2 more times So that you should actually have 4groups of 4double crochets and 3 chain 2 spaces then I am assuming that the rest of your instructions state chain 2 & sliptstich into 3rd chain of first the dc to close to that You Can im me if you want to talk about what I've written some times when you have [ ] & ( ) areas in a pattern it can be really confusing untill you know what the writer ment . - Hello, Sounds like you trying to make a granny square or at least this is how a granny square begins. Go here and there are pictures along with instructions to help you begin. I always like to see what something looks like as I am creating it. http://www.knitting-n-crochet.com/granny-square.html You made your ring and conneted it to form a circle. You were no doubt told to chain three, this is used as your first dc in the beginning You will now make 3 dc (a 4 stitch cluster now) ch 2 (this gives you a space) 4 dc (your next cluster) repeat 3 times and take a look at the picture and you will see how it is done. Have fun
