Where can I learn to crochet/knit online?

Since my children think I dont have enough to do raising, worrying and taking care of all 7 of them-3 of them all decided to let me know that they making me a grandma. They also informed me that they want me to make each one a baby blanket to come home from hospital in. Now the fun part.I have no idea how to knit/crochet. Does anyone know of a good online sight to learn from along with maybe some ideas?

  1. Check out knittinghelp dot com. They also have free videos or at least they did the last time I visited them.
  2. I went to amazon.com and ordered a brand new copy of "Knitting for Dummies" very inexpensively. (after I borrowed it from the library and decided I was going to need it for awhile) They also had available "Crocheting for Dummies." Later I found online the Lion Brand webite, www.lionbrand.com. They have great step-by-step instructions for both knitting and crocheting, as well as lots of free patterns. I hear crocheting is easier and goes much faster, but I like the look of knitting and decided to learn it first. (still learning, but getting the hang of it) I've seen a lot of projects, (Knitty Gritty, on the DIY Channel), that involve both. Often it's a blanket or sweater in knit with a crochet border to finish it off. It's a very nice look.
  3. CROCHET These are some of the sites on how to crochet that I have. Notice that, at the end, I included a site where you can buy a "how to crochet software".........good luck: http://www.softmemories.com/resources/crochet/index.htm http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/instruction_directory.php http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/350.asp How to crochet software: http://www.sbcrochet.com/crochetsoftware.shtml
  4. Since you have three precious grandbabies-to-be, I recommend learning how to crochet first as it's quicker AND more forgiving in the "making errors & fixing them" department. I like to recommend the website www.anniesattic.com as they have video clips you can watch on your PC for free. Add to it the Turning Chains chart featured on the Crochet Guild of America's website, and you have two great resources within a few keystrokes. For books, I'd like to recommend "Crocheting in Plain English" by Maggie Reghetti, or "How to Crochet" by Pauline turner. Your local library may have them available for loan, or may be able to obtain them via intra-library loan from another branch within your area. For moral support, also recommend joining an online community such as "Crochet Partners" that hosted by Yahoo. Not only can you request help in understanding some aspect of a pattern you may be trying, or a stitch you are learning, but you will also be inspired by what the other members are doing as well. Finally, I recommend seeing if there are classes you can take at your local yarn shop. Learning from a "live" person is so much more enjoyable, AND you can request your children learn WITH you! Now that would be an heirloom project to consider! :) Good luck, ~Dee Stanziano CYCA Certified Crochet Teacher
