Which is easier to learn crochet or knitting?
Hi, I want to learn either how to knit or crochet to make a "granny" blanket and to give me something to wind down at the end of the day. I have no experience, can you please tell me which is easier to learn etc. My mother in law will teach me whatever I want to do. I just want the easiest one seeing as how it is meant to be a wind down activity. Thanks

- I have no expierience in crochet but I picked up knitting very quickly and easily. A girl at school actually taught me how to knit- and I only learned over a few lunch times- so it must be pretty easy! Knitting is very relaxing and you really can make some great things when doing it- so that's what I would recommend! http://www.knitandcrochettoday.com/index.html
- knitting is easy alot easy
- If you want to do the granny the thing to learn would be to crochet as there are very few patterns for knitting them and many in crochet. Later on when you get a chance also have her teach you how to knit as you will have both skills and can make a lot of things with the two crafts.
- In my experience crochet is easier to learn by yourself but with knitting it is better to have someone to show you, so I would get your mother in law to teach you knitting first. You could knit plain squares and join them with simple crochet, or use the squares as samplers to try out different knitting patterns, rib, cable etc. If you want to do it all in crochet there's a granny square pattern here: http://www.nezumiworld.com/crochet_013.htm
- I think crochet would be easier, one needle, one hand doing the work while the other holds the thread. I love to crochet and there are so many easy simple projects to do and they all make great gifts.
- try knitting first, to get the hang of the plain and purl, you learn how to cast on then start off with garter stitch (plain) then when you feel confident incorporate purl. Then you can tackle a easy pattern to learn how to decrease and increase, then to do rib and other patterns. When you have mastered knitting and you can read a pattern then get mum in law to show you how to crochet. Both are easy. Don't worry if you drop a stitch mum will show you how to pick it up. You 'll probably have holes in your knitting at first but thats normal. If you get frustrated put it down for the night and come back the next night. Practise makes perfect. Make your self a scarf, then you can make squares to sew together for a blanket. Good luck.
- I love to do both.:) I can Crochet much faster then I can Knit. If you want to make a granny blanket=crochet. http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/ccusa-grandGrannySquareAfghan.html?noImages=
- I am the president of a knitting and crochet club at my school and I find that people learn the basics of crochet faster. Once people get used to working with one hook (as opposed to two needles) then switching to knitting is much easier. The advanced stuff is easier in knitting that crochet so that's why I teach the basics of crochet (chains, single/double/triple crochet, and straight pieces) and then have them switch to knitting.
- I think that if you learn to knit first, picking up crochet later is easy. Be patient! It takes time! My first scarf looked liked a pregnant snake. I learned by going to www.learntoknit.com. In the basics, it will show you what supplies to pick up, and directions to start. Another source I used was a CD from Jo-Ann Fabrics. Here's the link for the CD. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3047&PRODID=prd18895&source=search I just picked up crocheting, and I used www.learntocrochet.com, and used the crochet CD from the same company. Here is the link to that CD. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3047&PRODID=prd19087 Good luck in learning! Once you get the hang of it, both are very relaxing!
- There are mixed reviews on which is easier. Some people find crocheting SUPER easy and knitting just baffles them. And vice versa (also there are those in between these extremes). Personally, I do both - knitting and crocheting. As to what I find easier, it really depends on my mood, what kind of material I'm working with, and how long I've been knitting/crocheting in one sitting.
