Stitches

What is the best way to hold the yarn in your left hand when knitting?

I tried the technique used from knittinghelp.com, which is wrapping the yarn around your pinky and index finger. I found this way awkward and my pinky doesn't have the strength to keep the yarn tight. I just learned to knit a couple of weeks ago and haven't been wrapping the yarn around my fingers at all, I just wrap the loose yarn around the knitting needle to make a stitch and pull to tighten.

  1. My mother says try flipping it over your forefinger and rest the string in your plam, to control the tightness
  2. I prefer to twirl the yarn around my index finger clockwise twice (so that there are two loops around your finger) and let the yarn rest against the palm of my hand with my pinky and ring finger holding it. (Sort of like making a gun shape with your hand) I've used the hold you described before, but i think this method is easier; it lets me knit faster without having too much slack.
