Crochet pattern help needed?
I found a pattern called Deer Stalker Hat somewhere online and printe it out. On it, it says "From Crochet Newsletter Magazine, No. 87, Page 10, Copyright 1997 Crochet Newsletter Magazine". It is a Sherlock Holmes looking hat. Here is my first question...On row 4, how do you get down to the next 8 unworked stitches after you sc the first 20? row 1: chain 29, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each chan across, turn (28 sc made) row2: ch 1, sc in first 20 sts; for Top leave last 8 sts unworked, turn (20) row 3: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (20) row 4: Ch 1; sc in first 20 sts, sc in 8 unworked sts three rows below, turn (28) row 5: ch 1, sc across (28) row 6-89: Repeat rows 2-5 consecutively Row 90: For Center Back Seam matching sts, sl st starting ch on opposite side of row 1 and back lps of row 89 together. Fasten off. Run a gathering thread through ends of rows at Top, pull tight; sew opening closed. Your help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

- If you actuallly work the pattern instead of trying to read it, it will probably make sense. When you sc the 20 stitches of row 3, you will finish at the same end that the extra stitches are left. You simply sc into the first of these stitches to make a tuck in the work and form the shape, then sc to the end. In fact, you are working two long rows, 2 short rows, two long rows etc. The work is forming fsideways, not around the head. Like this, only the short rows actually join each other. The left side will be the top, the right will be the opening. 0000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 000000000000000 000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 000000000000000 000000000000000
- To get the unworked 8 stitches just continue as if it was all the same level. Like the previous poster said you're making a tuck in the fabric so the top comes closer together. All you have to do is try it. It makes more sense when doing it than it does when reading it :) like most patterns.
