How do I take care of a dog bite after stitches on my hand?
I had 2 stitches on the palm of my hand from a dog bite, they were in for 10 days and by like day 6 I was almost pain-free. I got the stitches taken out today and my doctor put some "sanitary strips" or something over it to make sure it doesnt open up. They are these little white strips that stick to the bite....I dont really know how to explain them anyother way. And they hurt, and where the stitches were has become a little swollen! I would really really aprecieate if someone who has had this before or something could tell me if that is supposed to happen or what I should do.

- triple anti-biotic ointment from any local drugstore, over the counter. apply 2-3 times a day. like, neosporin ointment.
- Yes, it is normal. Ther steri strips can be a bit irritating. Your skin got irritated when the stitches were taken out. Follow the doctors instructions, you will be fine.
- i really dnt know
- Those little strips are called steri-strips. They will come off on their own in a few days, but don't scrub on them or peel them off. Leave them on as long as you can. For the pain and swelling, you can try applying an ice pack for 20 minutes several times a day and if you can, ibuprofen can help with inflammation and/or discomfort. You need to keep the area clean and dry. Wash it gently every day with soapy water and rinse...then pat dry so you don't rip off the steri-strips. DO NOTput any antibiotic ointment on it (it probably won't do any good and it will loosen the steri-strips). Watch for signs of infection, and if they occur...see your doctor: 1. Increased redness that spreads away from the bite area. If you see red streaks, get to a doctor pronto. 2. Increased pain 3. Fever over 101 4. Pus drainage from bite site.
- Is kicking the dog out of the question? But for your wound, call the doctor who took the stitches out; you should be able to get some free advice on the phone. He is the most familiar with your injury.
