Stitches

Recently I just learnt to knit the Stockinette Stitch but the sides keep curling inwards.?

This is the first time I'm using the stockinette stitch to make a scarf but as I keep going on, the sides tend to curl inwards which is a little annoying. How do I prevent that?

  1. When you are finished with the scarf, use an iron to block the piece and it will be alright after that.
  2. You can't stop it from curling in when you are knitting it because it doesn't have an edge. What you can do is when you are done you can put an edge on it, or you can block it... which basically consists of wetting down your piece and pinning it to a board so it drys flat. The other option is to use a couple of garter stitches at the beginning and end of each row to make an edge.
  3. You can't. It is the nature of Stockinette Stitch to curl. you can block it but the curl will come back. Slipping your first stitch can reduce the curl. To do that, just put your needle in the first stitch the way you normally would and then slide the stitch over to the right hand needle without creating a new stitch. Knitting the first and last stitches will control the curl. So on the purl row, knit the first stitch and then at the end knit the last one. Have fun learning to knit! You'll really enjoy the things you can make.
  4. Congrats! That's what *perfect* stockinette stitch does. If you don't want the edges to curl, do a border of garter stitch, or slip-stitch the first stitch in each row. The garter stitch border can be as narrow as just one stitch (each edge) or can be a few stitches wide (each edge).
  5. That's what stockinette stitch does -- it curls. It looks good on the brim of hat or the neck of a sweater, but it sounds like that wasn't the look you were going for. You can either frog (rip it, rip it) and start all over again, this time knitting a border on all four sides in a stitch that doesn't curl (garter, seed, moss, etc.); let the scarf curl up into a tube; back it with fleece; or fold it in half lengthwise & seam it on all three sides. Blocking will not work.
