how do I avoid getting a stitch in my side while running?
I've been training for a 1.5 mile run that I have to do soon. Without fail, I get a stitch in my right side at about 1 mile into the run. By the time I finish, it's agony. I've heard these are due to lack of oxygen, lack of electrolytes, etc. Are there any concrete facts as to what causes them, and how to avoid them? btw I do my run outdoors over hills and such, the 1 mile mark comes after a long uphill run. I like the extra challenge, but I know this probably adds to the problem.

- Try not to eat too much before you run, do warm ups and always try to breathe through your nose, and dont stop in the middle of running. That works for me.
- The pain in your side is caused by lack of oxygen form waht I remember from health class. Really concentrate on your breathing for this pain to stop. IT might take a while and a lot of intense concentration but you can do it!
- Slow down. That helped my street runs.
- I'm not sure how to avoid it, but when it does occur, raise your right arm up in the air and over your head, it will help to stretch it out and ease the discomfort.
- Focus on deeper breaths while running. Shorter breaths force the diaphram to work harder and results in spasms.
- first, you need to let your body get used to all that running, second, do you eat before your exercise? i think gas is causing you to have this problem. (im a runner too) dont eat at least 3 hours before your exercise and drink tons of water.
