Ladies, did you enjoy cookery and needlework at school or would you rather have .....?
...... been in the tech block with the boys doing wood/metal work? My mother taught me more about cooking than any of the teachers did, infact I got wrong off them for comparing them unfavourably with Mam. I would much rather have been in the tech block but girls weren't allowed to do such things (perhaps in the sixth form ... We had one sixth form lad who took cookery ... he was laughed at and called gay. I hope he's a top chef now.)

- yes. it was ok. but i think learning to repair cars would have been more beneficial
- i left school 10 years ago and we never had needle work, i would have liked to have done that. You could pretty much do what you like, i chose woodwork and plenty of males did cookery. I think things have certainly changed with time
- Enjoyed cookery hated needle work so I swapped it for wood/metal. Suited me much better.
- I would have loved to go into the tech block and do woodwork and metal work, my mom was Italian and there was nothing left out when she taught me how to cook, the teachers at our school couldn't compare to her as a cook and I hated needlework with a passion and still do now.
- Like yourself I had learnt to cook and sew by the time we had D.S classes. It would have been far more useful to have been taught to change a plug, hang wallpaper, unblock a drain or change a tyre. These were things I learned later. The reality is now, though, that many people don't even learn the basics of cooking any more or how to sew on a button. So before kids start learning how to make pipe racks, or whatever the modren equivilent is, they should have basic domestic skills. Even if it isn't necessary to know how to skin and joint a rabbit or make brawn by the age of 11 anymore.
- i did do metal work then needle work then cookery 4months at each ...really enjoyed it, disliked needlework the most .. :)
- cooking
- well i never dont it but i would have liked to give it a bash!
- yes i loved both subjects, but like you my mum taught me to cook properly have a star xxxxxxxxx
- I think both boys & girls should do both cooking & needlework at school I was taught to knit when I was about 7 & still work at it today
