How do I keep my dog from licking and biting at his stitches?

My dog had a sist removed from his tail and he has stitches, I can't keep him from trying ot bite at them. I can't do the E-collar.

  1. well, thats all you can really do. is get the 'coney collar'
  2. Put a elizabethian collar on him, other wise he will do more damge.
  3. Put some kind of diaper on him to keep him away from them or some pants that he can't bite off.
  4. the big cone thingy is the only way....it doesnt hurt the dog
  5. ask the vet for pain meds he could be in pain or put vit e cream on it maybe it iches.
  6. theres this thing that they make for dogs that like a cone so they cant pick at the stitches
  7. those coness! then give him ice cream, it will make him feel btter
  8. Why can't you do the e-collar? The dog really won't notice it so much after the first day. If you can't watch your dog 24/7, and nobody can, get an e-collar on him. Otherwise start saving your money for the incision repair and antibiotics for infection, when he rips out his sutures.
  9. why cant you do the e-collar? what will you do when he is alone if he wont leave it alone when your there ? that collar is for his safety
  10. Put a nappy on him or an old pair of knickers to secure it all into place so he can't rip off the bandages. I did this with my dog and the knickers help because he can't rip them off and the sore can dry out naturally as if you put a bandage on the sore it gets moist and infected.
  11. Ask your vet if they have a cone for the dogs head
  12. My puppies recently got stitches and they also bit theirs. What my family did was hold them until they fell asleep. I know it doesn't sound particularly smart but it's really the only way as you're unable to use the collar. Good luck!
  13. everytime u c your dog biting or licking the area distract him call his name, tap him do something to draw his attention else where
  14. you get one of these http://www.lionfish.dk/Hunde%20tilbeh%C3%B8r/0233%20Krave.jpg a plastic collar goes on the normal collar, and gives this result http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:JWiE-sDAkHzwLM:http://bp0.blogger.com/_tkm9v4opNG8/Rtj3pj7UOjI/AAAAAAAAAtU/3wIUTc--06M/s320/Chowder%2Bwith%2Bball%2B5.jpg which effectivly makes it imposible for the dog to reatch its stitches, your vet should have em, i am amased they didnt give you the option to pay to take one home
  15. YOU CAN BUY SPECIAL COLLARS AT PETSMART.
  16. Put a collar on him... if you 'cant do that' then go to your vets about the situation - please please dont put any bandage on the stitching area - like humans the wound HAS to breathe!
  17. The best answer is an E-collar, but if you absolutely can't, try spraying Aeroguard lightly on the area. It tastes horrid and I have used it to stop dogs chewing on each others ears.
