Is it OK for a 7th grade boy to like things like Knitting/sewing/needlework ?

- ummm yea its ok why wouldnt it be...its a bit feminine but who care be greatful hes doing his own thing and the girl above me sounds like an idiot cuz ur not asking this in the pregnancy questions lmao thats what ppl get for being mean
- this doesn't have anything to do with pregnancy, but it's definitely alright if you like it! not only girls can like that! if you like it, it's perfectly fine! it's just like asking if girls can like woodworking or metalworking.
- I don't see why not???
- If he's a pansy it's ok.
- Sure. I wouldn't go around letting everyone know though. Those skills will surely impress the ladies in the near future though :) Just keep it out of the locker room if you know what I mean.
- Why wouldn't it be? I know several men who like these kind of crafts. One is a civil engineer and loves to sew. One is a professional tile setter who loves to quilt. One is a respiratory therapist who makes fabulous cross stitch projects. All are middle aged and heterosexual. I think it's great that he has some of these interests.
- I think so, you might even find something like knitting relaxing. If you know how to sew you may even know how to sew on a button or mend a pair of pants. Keep it up! You might even use that skill to make "homemade" gifts like scarves!(which would mean a lot to the receiver of gift.)
- Yes it is OK but it will raise an eyebrow or two.
- why not, if you enjoy it. much better hobby than lets say doing drugs or drinking.
- Would you object if a girl wanted to learn car repair. Gender specific tasks are passe, dear. Roosevelt Greer was a 250 lb football player who enjoyed doing needlepoint, but I don't think anyone had the nerve to call him feminine. Bomber crews in WWII did knitting to take their minds off the their task and relieve the tension as they flew to their fight zones. Children need to have the freedom to explores their interests.
- what's wrong with knitting/sewing/needlework? its work, period, there's no shame in work.if he starts wearing dresses and playing with baby dolls you might need to do something, but knitting/sewing/needlework is not a problem.its a good thing for everyone to learn.
- Boarland , "Son let me tell ya what"!Some of the most famous / rich people in the world are men who design and sew / tailor clothing. In the 4th grade back in '66' a teacher taught us how to weave potholders. Me and about 12-15 guys who became jocks and later on the "Macho crowd". In our early 20's by way of meeting up at each others houses one mother let it slip that she needed some new potholders. 4 of us were there and to our surprise and amusement we finally 'fessed up' we still wove potholders for mom and aunts and grandmas. We all had a good laugh about how we would get our sisters to buy the materials to do this with or we would say at the local 5 and 10 store we were getting it for our mothers / sisters(cause we got tired of paying them off to keep their mouths shut). Imagine that, we also talked about sewing / mending our own clothes and one buddy who had been in the Marines said he made extra money sewing patches on guys uniforms. The needlework in one friend's parent's house where we went next showed off his needlework to us. "Artwork" as he called it . We laughed about other stories as how we hid our "hobby". Then out to the clubs we went and put on our 'Macho Act" for the girls at the local clubs were we were regarded as 'The Man's Men"
- HELL NO!!! HES GAY...jkjkjkjk...its not normal but I guess everybodies different
- My personaly opionion is it is fine. However my husband says that during that time he needs to do more manly things. I think there is nothing wrong with him getting in touch with his femine side Good Luck
- are you going to next ask if it is OK for a girl to like science and sports?
- yes?? what is wrong with that...I'm sorry but i understand why you would ask that...but men and women need to get out of the sterotyping of crap and saying thats a womans job..what do you say to all of the famous cooks that are men?/ emeril anyone???
- absolutely its ok, I started sewing in the 7th grade, got my first sewing machine that christmas and have loved it ever since. I now work for Husqvarna/Viking a well known sewing machine company and people admire me, I regularly have coffee with my home ec teachers from school and they even ask me sewing related questions, trust me its fine. The only problem you will have is how many people ask you to repair their clothes or make you something. I am at the forefront of the industry and know more about sewing machines and sewing than most people. so get sewing and you may find yourself working in the industry.
- yeah, you can do what you like, nothing is made for just girls or boys, and if your friends make fun of you about it, they are not really your friends!
- Hi might get teased by his friends but some boys do get interested in textile arts. My son went through such a phase in his freshman year of high school. He crocheted a pillow, I still have it.
- at that age all boys experiment no different than cooking, sometime in life it may come in handy for him after all who is to judge makes a man feel more independent later in life i am a female and i can't knit or do needle work someday he may make lots of money with his crafts. I would say he is a young boy with an interest and that would be better knowing he was on the couch knitting rather than running the streets
- yes, remember fashion designers can make alot of money and if its wha the loves to do
- I dont see anything wrong with it, he sounds like a creative boy
- Everyone is different with different interests. There is nothing wrong with having interests that used to be considered 'feminine'.
- yes, why not? I have an embroidery company and most of the large companies are owned and run by men. He sounds creative. Have him save up for a small embroidery machine and let him go-its better than some interests!
- There is nothing wrong with that at all! Actually, it's pretty cool that he's so unique, and feels comfortable enough to be able to explore what he likes without having to be what other people expect him to be. In addition, those skills will also improve his dexterity, motor skills, and hand eye coordination. Just as a side note, to let you know that there is nothing wrong with this, my child's 6th grade class did knitting as an actual class activity every week. And the boys liked it more then the girls. Lastly, if you watch/read the anime "Bleach" one of the main characters is a guy ( Uryƫ Ishida) who happens to be the captain of the fine crafts club, and is a master of sewing and design!
- My husband could cook (I mean like gourmet meals) and sew in high school. He was also the destroyer on the football and is now a bodybuilder. I think its great for boys to be interested in and learn typical "women's things" no worries it is definitely OK.
- Sure, it's fine for guys to do things like that, but even so it's a good idea not to talk about it too much. The guy would probably get teased about it, depending on how the people are. But that's no reason to stop doing it!
- Sure if he is genuinely interested in the craft-since this is the millennium- there are tons of male designers and some are completely heterosexual-- I would foster this interest and perhaps probe him as to this curiosity/interest- perhaps ask him about designing or other related disciplines to see if he has a career interest in it and perhaps expand this interest.
- yes i think it is great to have those as a hobby
- My son was The star defensive end at his high school. When he was in the 7th grade, he asked me to teach him to sew, knit, and crochet, so I taught him. It didn't make him feminine, but he learned to appreciate the homemade things I gave him as gifts. It's okay for you to do those kind of things. Some professional athletes do them for relaxation.
- Ok let's just get this straight a boy who likes feminine things is not neccesarily going to turn out to be gay and if he is so what? I think that when a boy does more feminine things when he is younger he just may grow up to be the perfect man for someone. A man who is more in tuned with women.
- No....it is not
