Yarn, needlework, and quilting shops in the Melbourne area?

I am an American who likes to cross stitch, knit and quilt and will be moving to Melbourne, VIC in early March. Could anyone provide me with suggestions of stores in the area to purchase fabrics, yarns, etc?

  1. http://home.vicnet.net.au/~knitters/index.html That is a web address of a knitters guild in Melbourne and the contact person is: janet@techinfo.com.au I am sure that if you contact this person, they can not only tell you if there is a yarn, needlework, and quilting shop in Melbourne, but also where the least expensive shops are. Good luck.
  2. Melbourne is a large place. Trust me, there are plenty of shops, but I can't recommend any if I don't know where you are moving to. When you get settled, pull out your yellow pages phone book and do a tour ;) I'd also do a google search to find your closest knitting or quilting group. Many craft shops have classes too, that's a good way of meeting others. Spotlight and Lincraft are the major chains, but there are heaps of small shops. They may be cheaper or more expensive, but stock more speciality stuff. Up here in Bendigo (2 hours north of Melb,) we have a wool mill, so make sure you stop in there if you're ever up this way. We also have the Sheep and Wool show each year. Believe me, you want to come and play!
  3. This website has an extensive list of yarn stores, just pick which ever one is closest to where you live. http://www.woolworks.org/stores/oz.html
