What is the best way to protect stitches (on knuckle) from water at the beach or in a pool?

My wife slashed her finger open 4 days before a trip to Hawaii. What is the best way for her to protect the wound (7 stitches) and still be able to go in the pool / ocean?

1. A rubber or latex-free glove, taped at the wrist. I'd be very cautious not to get it wet as it could become infected.
