What does it mean when your stitches start to itch?

I had surgery on my finger almost 2 weeks ago and I of course required stitches. I am having them removed on Weds but was just wondering why they would be itching? My finger is so itchy! No derogatory comments please! Oh and there is no infection or strange coloring.
