How can I clean a framed needlework?
I have a framed crewel needlework that my mother stitched for me years ago. It is dark from dust, grime, and natural gas heat. I want to get it cleaned, but I don't know where to take it. I'm assuming it will have to come out of the frame, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions, please?

- Yes! Go to www.heloise.com and ask your question. I know she has covered this in her column before. If this answer isn't on her website, you can always write to have her answer the question in her column again. If you want to have it professionally cleaned, phone your dry cleaner and ask if they handle these things. If not, they would probably know who does in your area.
- If you get it proffesionally cleaned, make sure the place is experienced with cleaning this sort of thing. I would imagine some dry cleaners would be.
- Go here: http://www.treasuredtapestries.com/cleaning.html they cover exactly this question. Lots of tips for products you can use at home. They do say do not wash any canvas, and that it helps to know what kind of thread/fibers were used -- wool or cotton, and how they were dyed. More detail there. You may not have to pay for a dry cleaner at all, and I've known of dry cleaners who claim expertise and you come home with ruined fabric or buttons. With something with this sentimental value, you don't want to take that chance. Hope this helps!
